The Brazilian artist Luiz Zerbini came of age in the 1980s, when he was part of the “return to painting” movement in Rio de Janeiro. Right from the start he was intent on exploring the complex relationship between nature and humanity, taking inspiration from the colors and light of the nearby Amazon and Mata Atlântica rainforests. Two years ago, Zerbini delighted audiences at Foundation Cartier in Paris, when he transformed the main gallery into an urban jungle, combining large-scale installations with paintings of tropical trees. In this exhibition, he paints Brazilian tropical fauna curving and climbing within grid formats, powerfully evoking the carefully arranged cities imposed upon natural ecosystems. —E.C.
