Lucky

Anya Taylor-Joy and Drew Starkey in Lucky.

Anya Taylor-Joy makes a lot of things cool: smoking, playing chess, even eating a burger while covered in blood (The Menu). The cool streak continues with the role of Lucky, a reformed conwoman who wakes up in a Las Vegas hotel, betrayed by an ally, and is now on the run from both the FBI and her own crime boss. An unabashed antiheroine, Lucky steals from children and sets people on fire, tricks she learned from her father, an imprisoned former criminal. The gist of the show, which includes a Fiona Apple theme song, is this: Lucky must return to her illicit ways one last time in hopes of securing freedom from her underworld upbringing. “People like to see me struggle, and they like me to survive,” Taylor-Joy said in an interview. “And, luckily, I enjoy doing it, too, so it works out.” —Maggie Turner
