In 1961, Lucio Fontana had his first U.S. solo show. The Argentine-Italian artist was 62 years old, and the exhibition was at 32 East 69th Street, in the galleries of art dealers Martha Jackson and David Anderson. Fontana’s work returns to the same storied Upper East Side space, now home to Hauser & Wirth. This is the second of Hauser & Wirth’s trilogy of Fontana exhibitions and the focus is on his sculpture. Seventy-nine works in concrete, clay, terracotta, metal, and glass pose the same question that the art historian Enrico Crispolti asked in the early 2000s. “What if he had only been a sculptor?” —Elena Clavarino
