“I want to have a conversation,” the Turner-Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid said in 2017. “You bring your baggage, your opinion, your life, and I’ll bring mine—and let’s try to talk about it.” Himid is inspired by the personal—bright African textiles recall her native Zanzibar—and the political: in paintings touched with surrealism, she points up what Black life in Britain feels like, and how often that feeling goes unnoticed. A pioneer of the 1980s British Black Arts Movement, Himid now has a retrospective in the Tate galleries, which includes pivotal pieces and recent work. —C.J.F.
