Louise Bourgeois

July 1 – Dec 31, 2021
1040 Mass MoCA Way, North Adams, MA 01247, USA

The artist Louise Bourgeois returned to certain power dynamics over and over again, her work addressing the ways men impose themselves on women, how matriarchy looms over masculinity, how the subconscious exerts its will. Even her sculptures in marble, on display at MASS MoCA, embody these subjects. Bourgeois began working with marble in the 1960s, and reveled in the challenges of this difficult stone. “The resistance of the material is part of the chaos,” she said. “I can express myself only in a desperate fighting position.” The marbles in this exhibition, one weighing 15 tons, have never before been seen in the U.S. —Ariella Paradise
