“A year ago, we all knew that we are all connected,” says the artist Lorna Simpson, “and holding close to that belief in connectedness would be the place from which we take a deep breath and try to proceed or try to move forward.” Simpson uses photographic collages to challenge racial and gender stereotypes—and to connect the individual to the cosmos. For her first exhibition in Greater China, Simpson cuts faces out of Ebony magazine and places them in outer space, among spirals of stars. The effect is otherworldly. —E.C.
