In 1721, the soldier Anastasius Lagrantinus Rosenstengel was executed. Born a woman, Anastasius lived as a man and eventually fell in love with, and married, a woman, Catharina Mülhahn. When Catharina’s mother found out that her daughter’s new husband was biologically a woman, she turned him in to the authorities, who charged him with sodomy. Ruby Thomas’s new play brings the ill-fated lovers to the stage. Directed by Owen Horsley, the show stars Maggie Bain as Anastasius and Helena Wilson as Catharina. —Jensen Davis
