“Take a step back,” advises the artist Leonardo Drew, “the truth is right there.” Drew’s work is unburdened by fancy titles or explanations. He encourages viewers to take his sculptures and installations at face value, and then find a meaning for themselves. With materials like raw cotton, paper, plant matter, even mud, he comments on man versus nature, African American culture, and urban society. The truth is right there—in the texture of the material, it’s age-old voice. —E.C.
