Back in 2002, long before the original Law & Order went off the air in 2010, Michael Kinsley summed up in Slate why reruns of the series have endless appeal: “In the marital relations system, the people are represented by two separate but equally important groups: the wives who watch Law & Order obsessively, and the husbands who don’t.” Happily, the premier episode of the new Law & Order is like a rerun of that one episode in season 12 that you somehow missed during a blackout. Same format, a few old cast members (Sam Waterston!), and torn-from-the-headlines plots: Law & Order, vintage-style. —Alessandra Stanley
