It’s a big moment for the Moroccan-born and Swiss-based artist Latifa Echakhch. Not only is she representing Switzerland at the 59th Venice Biennale, she’s also getting a solo exhibition—her first—at Pace Gallery in London. Echakhch wants to submerge her viewers in a collective experience, a shared emotion. To do so, she employs a range of mediums: painting, sculpture, sound, and light. In both her Venice and London exhibitions, the collective experiences are all about late-night fun with friends. At the Biennale, Echakhch presents The Concert, which aims to take viewers through the shared experience of leaving a concert. At Pace, “Night Time” relies more heavily on figurative works, but similarly lets us, for a moment, plunge into the nightlife of Echakhch’s friends in Lausanne.
