Lari Pittman is an acclaimed Colombian-American painter who has dealt with themes of representation and prejudice since his emergence on the California art scene in the mid 1970s. His oeuvre consists of highly activated and colorful abstract works with references to a wide array of artistic movements, the Baroque and Surrealism among them. The paintings on display in this latest exhibition are typically Pittman, yet have an added sense of flatness imposed by cage-like details painted over the lower registers of the compositions. The artist’s first solo exhibition in Paris explores the intertwined histories of the United States and France. —Sabina Vitale
