The guy labels himself quixotic, and who’s going to say no? Last February, the endlessly inventive Maui minstrel and mainland transplant Kimo Nevius challenged himself to write, record with his one-man band Promised Road, and release to Spotify and suchlike platforms a new song every week for 53 weeks. With the occasional nod to John Cage, Meredith Monk, and Jane Austen, plus an assist or two from AI, Nevius has churned out a gallimaufry that incorporates acoustic ballads, 80s synth-pop, smatterings of rock, pop, sea shanties, classical minimalism, British white soul, and who knows what else. An engaging emcee, Nevius celebrates the conclusion of the herculean project at ProArts Playhouse, South Maui’s black-box, jewel-box, shoe-box answer to Lincoln Center. The program promises live performance, recorded tracks, “one-of-a-kind” visuals (?), and a special guest or two, all highlighting “the biggest hits and deepest cuts of this musical adventure.” —Matthew Gurewitsch
