Looking at Kiki Kogelnik’s paintings, one might think they were made today. But Kogelnik was born in Vienna in 1935, grew up in war-torn Europe, and studied at Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts. She then relocated to New York in that happening decade—the 1960s. Abstract Expressionism was still a force, Pop art was rising, and Cold War sentiments were running high. Kogelnik immediately found her place among contemporaries Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, and Andy Warhol. Bold shapes and color planes coexist in her work, which often depicts high-tech versions of the human body. Kogelnik died in 1997. This is the largest solo exhibition of her work to date. —Elena Clavarino
