On view in the Rubin Museum’s eighth-floor gallery, this exhibition examines how artists have engaged with the landscape across time. Reaching from European Romanticism to contemporary reflections on nature and mental health, the show considers the landscape as a site of memory, identity, and political struggle. Several works challenge conventional wisdom about our relationship with the genre, such as the paintings of Clement Siatous, a Mauritian painter who documented the daily life of the Chagossian people after their forced displacement by the British Empire. Additional highlights include works by Francis Alÿs, Winfred Rembert, and Joseph Beuys, each offering a distinct perspective on how we interact with the land. —Charlie St John
