“If you throw money out of the window,” said Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s head designer from 1983 until the day he died in 2019, “throw it with joy.” Here is an occasion to take that advice: the upcoming auction, at Sotheby’s, of Lagerfeld’s estate. Over 1,000 items are on sale, from Takashi Murakami’s portrait of the designer to three Rolls-Royces. There are bowls decorated with the likeness of Lagerfeld’s beloved Birman cat, Choupette, and more than 200 pairs of the designer’s own fingerless black-leather gloves, a signature accessory. Pace yourself, because the auction unfolds in three parts. This week the sale is in Monaco, next week it’s Paris. The final installment comes in March, in Cologne. —J.D.
