“These works are about personal growth,” Joyce J. Scott has said. “About art I am fairly fearless but in everyday life I am not.” In 2018, Scott was hailed for her pioneering mixture of soil, straw, clay, and cement, which she used to create a disintegrating sculpture. She’s also known for her figurative creations, made from interwoven pony beads and seed beans. Her work is often steeped in both African American and Native American tradition. Scott grew up in Baltimore and thinks of herself as a “true Baltimore babe.” She’s now 76. This exhibition in her hometown presents work from the last 50 years. —Elena Clavarino
