Manhattan, a magnificent abstract mural by Josef Albers, commissioned by Walter Gropius for the Pan Am—now MetLife—building back in the early 60s, was removed in 2000 during a lobby renovation. The Albers Foundation has worked hard to have the mural reconstructed in an appropriate location, and as of September 23, the new Manhattan triumphantly returns to its original location at 200 Park Avenue, positioned over the entrance escalators that go down into Grand Central Station. A vision of the city in teeming horizontal bands that gleam with energy, “It honors the vibrant metropolis,” says Nicholas Fox Weber, executive director of the Albers Foundation, “as a haven from tyranny and a source of endless inspiration.” —L.J.
