The works in Jonathan Okoronkwo’s first exhibition in the U.K. began as scrap. Literally, he picked through the scrapyard of Suame Magazine—a huge industrial zone in Kumasi, Ghana, that’s filled with countless metal workshops as well as vehicle repair centers. Okoronkwo then disassembled and arranged the machine parts according to their type and characteristics, then photographed and digitally reassembled them. The images are painterly works of art that study the upsides, downsides, and structures of forgotten machinery. Okoronkwo’s practice includes painting, woodwork, welding, assemblage, and construction. Four years ago, Okoronkwo installed some of his projects in Nima-Mok, another scrapyard in Kumasi. Today, they’re on display at Emalin in London. —Henry McGrath
