The venue for Chloe Xtina’s play, which is produced by the Tank, is not a theater but a grocery store in Crown Heights. Staged late at night, long after shoppers have left, Joan of Arc in a Supermarket in California follows Frances, a woman who zips down freeways in search of a Northern California grocery store where as a teenager she received a prophecy (in Aisle 3, no less). The store itself is manned by three teenage girls who contend with a growing sense of paranoia. As the show goes on, chaos consumes the store: a wild fire rages towards the shop, a ballerina flashmob takes over the aisles, and girls have a seance with kiwis. Yes, it’s experimental. —Jensen Davis
