Born in the Congo in 1990 and raised from the age of 10 in Dallas, Texas, Jimi Kabela grew up with a foot in two worlds. In his abstract oil paintings, he attempts to bring those worlds together, embedding the works with fragments of African textile. “The bold, colorful patterns worn by the men and women of the Congo serve as a reminder of my ancestors, language and origins,” Kabela explains. The artist also credits his upbringing in Dallas for influencing his style. Colors, textures, and shapes synchronize and meld in joyful interplay in the 30 paintings on display, which range in scale from the size of a postcard to eight feet across. —Paulina Prosnitz
