As curator Sarah C. Bancroft has written of the artist James Rosenquist, “From age twenty-seven to thirty-seven, he had grown from a young buck Pop artist who ruffled the artistic establishment to an esteemed insider.” She’s referring to the 1960s, when Rosenquist went from designing commercial billboards and theater marquees to becoming a major figure in the fine arts landscape, an artist who played with the restrictions of perception and the medium of painting itself.
