The actor and artist James Franco spent the pandemic in Los Angeles, which he describes as an “almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere. . . . Dreamland had became for me a waste land.” The misery of the experience inspired his newest series of works, 28 canvases and objets d’art. Working primarily in the medium of collage—his surfaces resemble destroyed posters—Franco utilizes imagery of Hollywood’s heyday and star power to suggest the destructive fallout of its glamour. Evidently, to Franco, Hollywood is hell. —Lucy Horowitz
