In his book The Venetian Pariah, Jean-Paul Sartre explained that Titian was Tintoretto’s main artistic inspiration. In fact, the latter had written an important phrase on his studio wall, which came to define his practice: ”Il disegno di Michelangelo, il colorito di Tiziano” (Michelangelo’s drawing, Titian’s complexion). The objective was simple—to combine the best qualities of those he admired. This was not only a matter of artistic ideals but of competition. Rivalry between artists was a driving feature of the era’s artistic practices. This exhibition, which also includes masterpieces by Dürer, Rubens, Cellini, and Sofonisba, addresses competition and confrontation through paintings and sculptures, on loan from museums around the world. —Elena Clavarino
