Fernando Botero (1932–2023) lived in New York from 1960 to 1973, and it was there—in the midst of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art—that he refined the monumentally rounded figures that made him the world’s most recognizable Latin American artist. Sotheby’s is now presenting more than 20 rarely seen works from that formative period, drawn from the Botero family and private collections. They can be seen at the Breuer building—the former home of the Whitney Museum, an apt setting given Botero’s long dialogue with American art. Highlights include Apotheosis of Ramón Hoyos (1959), one of Botero’s rare forays into abstraction, and Mona Lisa, Age Thirteen (1959). —Elena Clavarino
