“These jewelry pieces are not just magnificent in and of themselves,” says Sean M. Decatur, the president of the American Museum of Natural History, “they’re an important part of hip-hop history and hip-hop culture as artists claimed and transformed traditional symbols of luxury and success.” He’s talking about “Ice Cold,” a new exhibition on the evolution of bling in hip-hop over the last 50 years. The show moves from the chunky gold chains that early rappers wore in the 80s, to the record-label pendants made of diamonds in the 90s, to the avant-garde pieces that emerged with the new millennium. Highlights include The Notorious B.I.G’s gold Jesus piece, Nicki Minaj’s Barbie necklace (18-karat white gold with 104 diamonds), and items from A$AP Rocky; Joey Bada$$; and Tyler, the Creator. —Jeanne Malle
