The joy of being in nature is what Horatio’s Garden, a British charity presided over by Princess Eugenie, brings to spinal-injury centers across the U.K., for whom it creates and maintains therapeutic gardens. It’s also the theme for the charity’s first-ever Summer Art Auction, featuring paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and photographs donated by 50 contemporary artists and ranging in price from $400 to $40,000. “I clearly remember my first experience of being wheeled out into the sunshine, to hear the birds singing and to smell flowers,” says the artist Keith Jansz, who was paralyzed from his shoulders down following a car accident in 1995. “After months of confinement in the ward it was transformative.” Jansz is able to paint with a brush held in his mouth, and his contribution to the auction is a vibrant summer garden scene. —J.V.
