Some things never get old, and a good piece of satire—the British painter William Hogarth knew only too well—is one of those things. A new exhibition unites all the darkly ironic works for which this 18th-century artist is known, story-telling series that include “A Harlot’s Progress,” “A Rake’s Progress,” “Gin Lane,” and “Marriage A-la-Mode.” Taking aim at all classes of society, Hogarth’s scathing scenes of greed, hypocrisy, immorality, and vice are as relevant today as they were more than 200 years ago. —J.V.
