Harold Ancart: Traveling Light

Sept 10 – Oct 17, 2020
525 West 19th Street, New York, NY 10011, United States

“Abstraction comes from reality,” says the Belgian painter Harold Ancart, and his latest series at Zwirner proves it. The exhibition, called “Traveling Light,” features Ancart’s paintings of trees. They were inspired, the artist recently told The New York Times, by a drive through a forest in France, where he noticed the way light traveled through openings in the branches. Ancart renders these openings as ragged flashes of color—sky blues, haze pinks, sunset orange—that turn the trees into strange galaxies of green, and light into floating matter. —L.J.
