Harland Miller

May 31 – Aug 24, 2019
50 Connaught Rd Central, Central, Hong Kong

The British author and artist Harland Miller is known for paintings of iconic book covers (think Penguin Books) that he titles with mordant quips and sly comments. In his first exhibition in Hong Kong, Miller explores language indirectly. Here, text becomes a painterly device. Within the frame of each canvas a one-word title—sin, nude, boss—cues the viewer to the letters in the painting, hugely scaled and layered one on top of the other. It’s a colorful game of hide and seek and seeing. —J.V.
