It’s a very big night for the Puerto Rican-born composer and multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón, who writes for voices, orchestras, ensembles, and film as well as for robots, toys, and plants, often blending in electronics, instruments you’ve never heard of, and so-called “found” sounds. Negrón’s new cello concerto Mundillo gets its dream send-off headlined by the classical rock star Yo-Yo Ma, with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic on backup. The title, which literally means “small world,” apparently also refers to a specialized cylindrical pillow used in making Puerto Rican bobbin lace (you’re welcome). Post-intermission, settle in for the surefire thrills of Richard Strauss’s tone poem Ein Heldenleben. —Matthew Gurewitsch
