“Glory of the world this painting surely is, and glory of the world his painting surely was and is,” Frank Stella wrote of Hans Hofmann’s Gloriamundi (1963). Titled after Stella’s words, “Glory of the World” surveys Color Field painting, a movement that saw abstract artists covering their canvases in fields of solid color. Following the work of Abstract Expressionists like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, artists such as Frank Bowling, Helen Frankenthaler, and Sam Gilliam moved away from their predecessors’ highly emotional techniques. “I will sometimes start a picture feeling ‘What will happen if I work with three blues and another color, and maybe more or less of the other color than the combined blues?’” Helen Frankenthaler told Artforum in 1965. This exhibition explores the movement from its origins in the early 1950s to its conclusion in 1983, when postmodernism was ascendant. —Jeanne Malle
