In 1961, a volcano in Tristan da Cunha, an island halfway between South America and South Africa, erupted. To avoid the lava, a settlement on the island—a group of people far removed from modern society—was forced to decamp to England. The islanders found life in England jarring, and eagerly returned home two years after the eruption. Their story inspired Zinnie Harris to write Further From the Furthest Thing (2000), a two-act play about that uneasy two-year stay in England. Young Vic’s associate director Jennifer Tang helms a new production, the first major staging in London in 20 years. —Jensen Davis
