In this classic musical, 1930s New York is the “wonderful town” in question. Ruth and Eileen, two sisters from Ohio, come to Greenwich Village to chase their artistic dreams and maybe find love along the way. Ruth hopes to become a writer; Eileen, an actress. Their new life introduces them to an unexpected cast of characters. The show, which premiered on Broadway in 1953, has a book by Joseph A. Fields and Jerome Chodorov, lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and music by Leonard Bernstein. This Encores! revival is directed by Zhailon Levingston, fresh off his work on Cats: The Jellicle Ball. Though less known than some of Bernstein’s other works, Wonderful Town takes audiences back to “an age,” writes The Guardian critic Michael Billington, “when Broadway musicals were sharp, literate and funny.” —Jeanne Malle
