In 1964, two years after her Broadway debut in I Can Get It for You Wholesale, Barbra Streisand returned to Broadway, cast as Fanny Brice in the premiere production of Funny Girl. Set in Manhattan after the First World War, the musical is told through flashbacks: while waiting for her gambler husband, Nick Arnstein, to return from prison, Brice, a vaudeville actress who’s risen to Broadway stardom, remembers their meeting and married life. Streisand’s powerhouse performance landed her on the cover of Time. Four years later, the 1968 movie adaptation landed her the Oscar for Best Actress. Streisand is 80 this year, a birthday that sees the first Broadway revival of Funny Girl. Beanie Feldstein, just off her role as Monica Lewinsky in American Crime Story, stars as the heartbroken but ever-resolute Brice. Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book for the musical Kinky Boots, has provided revisions. Ramin Karimloo plays Arnstein and Jane Lynch is Brice’s mother. —Jensen Davis
