“Neither love nor terror makes one blind: indifference makes one blind.” That’s James Baldwin (1924–1987), the writer whose poignant meditations on race, sexuality, art, and politics keep proving pertinent to every major cultural conversation today. The Detroit-based creative Sabrina Nelson, who’s charged herself with capturing Baldwin’s ineffable impact, has pieced together a seven-year sketchbook study, installations, projected videos, and vivid canvases to form a multisensory experience. “His words and expressions connected deeply with how I felt the world was treating its dwellers who are Black and Brown,” says Nelson. The result is a celebration of Baldwin that is both intimate and deeply personal, an apt tribute to a man whose prose has touched the hearts and minds of people across the globe. —Nyla Gilstrap
