Ceremonial regalia aside, is there such a thing as royal style? Is it a contradiction in terms? When we think of Queen Elizabeth II we see large hats, festive brooches, kitten heels, and dresses in solid colors paired with matching coats. “If I wore beige,” she told the royal biographer Robert Hardman, “nobody would know who I am.” This long-lived queen remained steadfast throughout her reign of 70 years and 214 days, and she applied the same ethos to her wardrobe. No trends—just vivid garments paired with neutral accessories. In the King’s Gallery, the largest exhibition ever to address the late Queen’s wardrobe brings together 200 items, including accessories, design sketches, fabric samples, and handwritten correspondence. —Elena Clavarino
