The artist David Heo draws inspiration from the two cultures that formed him. He was born and raised in the American South, but his parents are immigrants from South Korea. “I have memories of attending middle school, speaking English, eating chicken tenders for lunch,” he recently told Juxtapoz magazine. “But all that would switch when I got home…. My mom would cook a large pot of kimchi jigae (kimchi stew) for dinner, we’d speak Korean and she would tell me these fantastical Korean folk tales before bed.” Those disparate childhood memories converge in paintings of vibrant color, now on view in Heo’s latest solo show. —Jensen Davis
