There was nothing conventional about Frank Walter. Born in 1926, possessing a lineage that included slaves of African descent and aristocratic European slave owners, the self-proclaimed “7th Prince of the West Indies” was an artist, writer, and polymath. Throughout his life, discriminatory practices in Europe meant he was under-recognized. Dismayed, Walter lived as a recluse in Falmouth Harbour, creating multimedia works that channelled William Blake and Hilma af Klint, yet vibrated with Caribbean energy. This exhibition presents Walter’s “spools”—a series of small circular paintings. Because of their size and shape, they feel like a telescope into his world view. —E.C.
