Every garden is a dynamic dialogue between the wild and the curated, between color and structure. Add in the passage of time and natural forces beyond the gardener’s control, and the garden exerts its own will, becoming strangely autonomous. “My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece,” said Claude Monet. Looking at images of gardens across periods and mediums, viewers may be struck by the similarities expressed in old Chinese scrolls and works of the moment. This exhibition at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts brings together gardens from its collection, and focuses on such continuities as land, refuge, and labor. “The garden,” Derek Jarman said, “is a metaphor for the soul.” —Elena Clavarino
