No two things sound more antithetical to each other than high fashion and food—one stray drop of salad dressing and that expensive silk is toast. This exhibition, however, explores the way food imagery in design becomes a form of social commentary. Featuring over 80 garments from both historic houses and contemporary designers, “Food & Fashion” is cleverly organized into a food hall with sections such as “Haute Couture/Haute Cuisine” and “The Fashion Cookbook.” The booths link food motifs to themes of consumerism, environmentalism, geopolitics, and ethnicity. Highlights are sure to include pieces such as Issey Miyake’s 2018 bento box of pleated accessories and Jeremy Scott’s red-and-yellow McDonald’s-inspired designs for Moschino’s Fall-Winter 2014 collection. And the show wouldn’t be complete without at least one of Judith Leiber’s deliciously glittering food-shaped minaudières. —Lucy Horowitz
