Filthy Ritual

Juliette D’Souza in 2014.

What if you could be miraculously cured of terminal cancer? Or could overcome infertility issues without the use of IVF? Or could meet Simon Cowell? Juliette D’Souza promised all that and more to her victims, and by the time of her arrest, in 2014, she’d swindled them out of almost $1.7 million. A self-styled shaman, D’Souza enthralled well-off Hampstead residents with her knowledge of alternative medicines and her ties to South American mysticism. The only thing she required in return for her services were envelopes of cash, which she claimed would be nailed to a sacred tree in the Amazonian rainforest as a spiritual offering. Unsurprisingly, the “offerings” were promptly turned into designer handbags, extravagant holidays, and antique furniture. Podcast hosts Suruthi Bala and Hannah Maguire—both experienced true-crime storytellers—talk to victims and journalists to unravel D’Souza’s web of lies, from her first con in 1998 to the moment those lies finally caught up with her. —Paulina Prosnitz
