5-6/F, H Queen’s, 80 Queen’s Road Central, Central, Hong Kong

Felix Gonzalez-Torres always knew his art was not for the mainstream. “My work is all my personal history,” he said. “I can’t separate my art from my life.” Born in 1957 in Guáimaro, Cuba, Gonzalez-Torres relocated to Puerto Rico, where he studied in San Juan. In 1979, he moved to New York to train in photography at the Pratt Institute. A gay man, his art was influenced by his sexuality. After his partner died in 1991 from AIDS-related illness, Gonzalez-Torres began to highlight themes of life, death, and queer love. He himself died in 1996, also from complications of AIDS, only 38 years old. In the first solo exhibition of his work in Hong Kong, the gallery is not only showcasing key pieces, but presents the city as a thematic foil to his work, exploring life and loss within urban public spaces. —Maggie Turner
