“If Monsieur X spent an eternity studying treatises on optics, he would never paint La Grande Jatte,” said the French art critic and collector Félix Fénéon, referring to the Pointillist masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, painted by his friend George Seurat. Fénéon’s keen eye for art and his support of forward-looking artists led him to help found the Neo-Impressionist movement. It’s not often that an art world personality—outside of the artists themselves—is shown the spotlight (Gertrude Stein being a major exception). This exhibition pays homage to the visionary critic behind major artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Félix Fénéon. —J.V.
