A real-life 21st-century drama, Fatherland is a documentary play that tells the story of the Reffitt family—the father Guy, who participated in the January 6th attack on the Capitol, and his 18-year-old son Jackson, who turned him in to the F.B.I. Created by Stephen Sachs and premiered earlier this year in Los Angeles, the play’s every word comes from public statements, case evidence, and the 2022 court transcripts of “United States v. Reffitt.” Ron Bottitta plays Guy, whose thinking is tangled in deeply rooted conspiracy theories. Patrick Keleher is Jackson, who believes his father was “used as a puppet,” and yet “made his own choices.” As Charles McNulty wrote in the Los Angeles Times, it’s “a conflict that is at once private and public, domestic and national.” —Jeanne Malle
