You might think that there would be little overlap between a ceramic mural and bronze sculptures, but this exhibition at the Bass finds an affinity. “Faire Foyer: Sarah Crowner in Dialogue With Etel Adnan,” is centered around a semicircular carpeted alcove—or a faire foyer, as the French would call it—that frames a huge ceramic mural created by the late Lebanese-American artist Etel Adnan and inspired by the California coastline. In this space, Crowner’s glittering bronze sculptures, cast from beach stones, are placed so that when the light hits them just right, they reflect on Adnan’s mural and affect its colors. It’s an interaction that questions the traditions of abstraction and how they can be combined to create something beautiful and new. —Alice Browne
