With their earthen midcentury colors, stylized biomorphic shapes, and a fallopian feeling of organic infrastructure, the paintings of Evelyn Statsinger occupy their own place, or space. Statsinger was born in 1927 in Brooklyn, and in her early 20s moved to Chicago, where she lived and worked until her death in 2016. Statsinger found inspiration in forests and fields, observing animal and plant life. “Bits and pieces of specially observed things begin to represent the whole,” she said, “and juxtapositions of real things make imaginary combinations. Combinations are open and ambiguous to interpretation, so that the viewer may wander in the same state of grace as the painter.” These gorgeous abstractions are underpinned by a meticulous study of nature. —Laura Jacobs
