Elizabeth Peyton: mountains in my heart (the death of Sarpedon)

Elizabeth Peyton, Happy Together (WKW), 2022–24.

525 West 19th Street, New York, NY 10011, United States

Elizabeth Peyton has always treated the sitters in her portraits, whether they’re A-Listers or unknowns, not just as the subject but as a part of the painting. Less than 50 people came to one of her early exhibitions, held at the Hotel Chelsea in 1993, but now, at 60, her work is recognized. Peyton still keeps to the same intimate approach. “A painting of a person can be descriptive, but for me it’s about all the things that make up a picture,” she’s explained, “the feelings, the brushstrokes—more than describing somebody.” In her first New York solo show at David Zwirner, new works immortalize more household names, as well as her friends and family. Expect to see some familiar faces. —Maggie Turner
