Edinburgh International Festival

A still from Mary, Queen of Scots.

Aug 1–24, 2024
National Museums Scotland, Chambers St, Edinburgh EH1 1JF, United Kingdom

This year’s Edinburgh International Festival is titled “The Truth We Seek,” a theme reflected in works that examine the intersection of fact, faith, and fiction. Attention: This three-week event is not to be confused with the Edinburgh International Film Festival or the Edinburgh Festival Fringe; they all just happen to be in the same month, offer quality content, and keep a safe distance from the red-carpet dynamic of, say, Cannes. The International Festival features dance, opera, theater, classical music, visual arts, and contemporary music. The 2025 season includes the world premiere of Make It Happen, the latest play from James Graham—starring Brian Cox—and the ballet Mary, Queen of Scots, an unconventional take on Scottish history told through choreography by Sophie Laplane. —Jeanne Malle
