East Asia Series I: A Compass in Hand

Nov 27, 2021 – Feb 27, 2022
The Mills 45 Pak Tin Par Street Tsuen Wan Hong Kong

Since the 1950s, globalization has swiftly changed the economic and social landscape of East Asia. China has become a global hub for manufacturing and export; Japan is now the world’s third largest economy; South Korea is an industrial force. The first of a two-part series calls on 15 East Asian artists and art collectives to explore the connection between their region’s economy and identity. Although the exhibition focuses on textiles, a range of mediums are on view. Kim Hwang’s Good Good Market, a video art piece, presents a worker caressing a pillow while experiencing an existential crisis. And Hugh Davies’s fortune-telling game, made of wood and paper, is available to play at select times. —Jensen Davis
