DTH on Demand

June 1 – July 25, 2020
466 W 152nd St, New York, NY 10031, United States

This spring, the Dance Theatre of Harlem—founded in 1969, in the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968—was supposed to be celebrating the second year of its two-year 50th Anniversary. Instead, DTH on Demand is bringing historic performances to audiences digitally. Programming for seven weeks—a mix of complete ballets and companion offerings—launched on June 6 with the company’s “Creole Giselle,” a beloved production from 1984, set among the ghostly bayous of Louisiana. On Jun 20: Robert Garland’s Return, choreographed in 1999 to songs by James Brown and Aretha Franklin. On June 27: Balamouk, a 2018 commission set to klezmer music. All weekly ballets will stream on DTH’s YouTube channel and Facebook page on Saturday at eight P.M., and remain available for viewing for two weeks thereafter. Check the site for other lively offerings throughout the week. —L.J.
